Project Brief
This project centered around us picking from a list of museums, researching the museum chosen, and creating a new brand for it. The brand we were tasked with creating needed to include an alphabet system, a color system, and merch items that all reflected the museums values and goals.
I decided to design for the Underwater Museum of Art in Cancún, Mexico, or MUSA.
Research
From my research, I found that MUSA is an underwater art museum with over 500 life-size sculptures by six different artists. It is divided into two gallaries: Salon Machones, which is eight meters deep and is ideal for diving and snorkling, and Salon Nizuc, which is four meters deep and best for just snorkeling. They also offer glass-bottom boat tours and a jungle tour where you’ll find and array of beautiful artworks and creatures.
The narrative I decided to work with for this museum was “to show the beauty of Cancun’s waters and wildlife to tourists in a fun and once-in-a-lifetime way”.
Initial Sketches
For the initial sketching of my ideas for the different museums, as I had not narrowed it down to MUSA just yet, I experimented by focusing on individual letters / groups of letters.
I finally landed on the watery design you see in the finalized logo. I did initially have the problem of the letterforms looking too “goopy” rather than watery, and you’ll see how I refine that as the designs move forward.
